The Times, They Are A Changing

Magazine readers see the back of The Face

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask this for a while now and the demise of "The Face" alomost provides an excuse. Whatever happened to my favourite "Rock Chick" of the early nineties - Ms. Wendy James? I have vainly trawled the net to no avail - all dead ends. Nothing, nada, zilch! And this from the girl who promised us she'd win an oscar by the time she was through. Oh Wendy . . . what on earth has become of you?



The best (i.e. most recent mention anywhere) I've been able to come up with is this picture of Wendy at a Glen Matlock gig at The Borderline, London 17th August 2000, with the Buzzcock's Tony Barber. One of those Face pictures of Wendy. And the well known poster shot.

There's also this. A play by David-Matthew Barnes called Sloe Gin Fizz. The story of Christopher who, obsessed with Wendy James and suffering from a broken heart after a failed relationship, out of loneliness finds himself drawn into a relationship with Marco who is married to a Korean woman he doesn't love. The play was staged by The Dorothy Nickle Performing Arts Company and received a world premiere at The Wing & Groove Theatre in Chicago on 9 August, 2000. Apparently the set designer Nick Moreno, having created a wall of Wendy as a backdrop for the play, was in the process of developing Sloe Gin Fizz into an independent film project, and was actively seeking contact info for Wendy with a view to making her an offer to appear in the film. The intention was to create a soundtrack around the film, comprised exclusively of her music. Maybe there's still hope for that Oscar.

When he hears her favourite Beatles song, Toru Watanabe recalls his first love Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend Kizuki. Set in the wild landscape of Western Australia, this is a novel about the odds of breaking with the past. a love story about people stifled by grief or regret, whose dreams are lost, whose hopes have dried up. It's a journey across landscapes within and without, about the music that sometimes arises from the dust.

Writer Jake Donaghue's adventures in London and Paris include falling in and out of love, kidnapping a canine film star, and trailing a onetime friend.

Like its noteworthy ancestors (Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, the Ancient Mariner and Moby Dick) Life of Pi is a tale of disaster at sea. Both a boys' own adventure (for grown-ups) and a meditation on faith and the value of religious metaphor, it was one of the most extraordinary and original novels of 2002. The only survivor from the wreck of a cargo ship on the Pacific, 16 year old Pi spends 221 days on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan and a 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger called Richard Parker...

Into the intrigue and violence of Indo-China comes Pyle, a young idealistic American sent to promote democracy through a mysterious Third Force. As his naive optimism starts to cause bloodshed, his friend Fowler, a cynical foreign correspondent, finds it hard to stand aside and watch.
